Arch of Caracalla (Thebeste) : ウィキペディア英語版 | Arch of Caracalla (Thebeste)
The Arch of Caracalla is a quadrifrons Roman triumphal arch from the beginning of the 3rd century, located in ''Theveste'' (modern day Tébessa in the Algerian province of the same name). ==History==
The arch was built between 211 and 214 by means of a testamentary donation of Gaius Cornelius Egrilianus, Prefect of the XIV legion, who was originally from ''Thebeste''.〔The inscription that records this information is inscribed on the inside of the northwest pylon: Accame 1938, p.247.〕 The figure set aside for the construction was 250,000 sesterti.〔Bacchielli 1987, citato in bibliografia.〕 Later it was reused as the northern gate of the city wall in the Byzantine period and the lateral arches were walled up, as was the northern one, until they were reopened by French military engineers during the colonial period.
